Donated breast milk is such a loving gift
The Oxytocin Trust has a close relationship with the incredible Lactation Consultants who work at Hutt Hospital. We love to support them in their mahi where we can.
Breast Milk donated to Hutt Hospital is used for pēpi in the Special Care Baby Unit (SCBU) and postnatal ward – it makes such a difference by helping many pēpi/babies, māmā and whānau.
Collecting donor breast milk requires a lot of coordination and behind the scenes mahi. We have supported this wonderful kaupapa so far by:
- Helping create a system for donor breast milk enquiries to be received, recorded and followed up with.
- Creating and circulating posters seeking surplus breast milk donations.
- Having Oxytocin Squad volunteers who will
- organise to pick up and deliver donor breast milk where donors are unable to get their milk into the maternity ward themselves.
- collect bottles deliver these to donors needing them to store their surplus breastmilk in.
- Securing a freezer suitable for storing donated breastmilk – we were so grateful to TSB Living who were willing to donate a freezer to us for this purpose, and to Rove who donated their time and van to collect and deliver this freezer to the Maternity Ward at Hutt Hospital.
